Foreground and background colors can be set for the "Titles" list box and note editing window. Choose "Foreground" or "Backgound" radio button then click on a color to set it. Clicking on the "Default" button will reset the colors to either Jots defaults or the notefile defaults, depending on context. "Cancel" will cancel any changes you've made.

These selections allow you to import text from a text file into the current note or export the current note to a text file.
Import:
When importing text, a file dialog is presented allowing you to peruse the disk to choose the file to import. Once a selection is made, the file will be inserted at the current cursor position. Jot makes no attempt to determine the type of file you've chosen so use caution when selecting an import file. I'm trying to find out how to check for file type, so if anyone out there has the answer, please let me know!
Export:
To export the current note to an ASCII text file, select "Export" from the menu, choose the drive and directory with the file dialog, then enter the name of the file you want to create. At this time, Jot will not let you overwrite or append to an existing file though that might be added in a future release if enough people are interested.,

Find and Replace Text
Jot has a small find and replace utility that will allow you to search for specific text and optionally replace that text with something else. The "Find" window can be left open while moving through the note titles list and will work on wharever note is being displayed.
Select "Edit - Find" from one of the menus or press "Ctrl F" to bring up the "Find" window.
Enter the text you want to find in the "Search For:" field and optionally the text to use as a replacement in the "Replace With:" field. If you want to perform a case sensitive search, check the "Case Sensitive" check box.
Clicking on "Find" will begin searching for the text at the current cursor position and will highlight the first occurance found. You can continue clicking "Find" to continue the search, or press "Change, then Find" to replace the found text then locate the next occurance.
"Change All" will change all occurances of the search text with the replacement text from the current cursor position to the end of the note. USE THIS CAREFULLY! You will not be prompted for verification before the global replacement is made.
The "Cancel" button will close the "Find" window and return you to the current note.

Add Note
You can add a new note to the current file by selecting "Add" from the button bar, or "New" from the "Note" menu of the main window or the popup for the editing area. Each newly created note will inherit whatever default settings are in effect for the current file but can be changed with the "Note Settings" window.
A note title can be any combination of numbers, characters and spaces and can be up to 60 characters long. Jot keeps track of the order in which titles are added to the list, though the current "Sort" setting for the list will effect where it is initially displayed. You cannot have titles with duplicate names.
Once a note has been created, use the "Note Settings" window to change the font, colors, use of word wrap and saving of cursor position. These settings will only affect the current note and will be used the next time the note is loaded.

To create a new notefile, select the "New File" button or "File - New" from the menus or press F6. Enter the name you want to use for the file following standard file naming conventions appropriate for the file system installed on your system. If you use HPFS, Jot can use long file names.
The new file will be created using whatever default settings are in effect in the Jot Settings window. After the file is created, you can customize it's behavior and appearance by using the "File Settings" window.

Using Toggles
For every note file you create, Jot allows you to configure the display of the menu, hints, button bar and titles list. However, regardless of default settings, display of these window elements can be toggled on or off at any time. The configuration settings for the current file are not changed in any way.

Installation
Jot is written in VX-Rexx and requires the file VROBJ.DLL, Version 2.14 or later and that Rexx support be installed on your system.
To install Jot:
Unzip the files in a directory of your choice then run "Install.cmd" from an OS/2 window. A program object will be created on your desktop that you can then move to anywhere you like. Jot makes no changes to your system ini files or to the config.sys file.
When first run, Jot will configure itself and create it's own ini file in the installation directory.

Titles List
The titles list displays the titles of all notes in the current note file. You can click once on a listed item to display the attached note, then use the cursor keys to move up or down the list to have each note displayed as you move through the list. To edit the currently highlighted note, press enter, double click on the title or click in the edit window.
Note titles can be sorted in ascending or descending order, or can be displayed in the order in which they were created by selecting "None" from a sort menu.

Printing
The printing abilities of Jot are a bit limited at this time, but you can print the current note to the default printer by selecting "Note - Print - Print Note" from the menus. You can also select a block of text and use "Note - Print - Print Selected Text" to print just the selected text. If no text is selected, this choice will have no effect.
No error checking is incorporated in the printing routines at this time, so if you don't have a printer connected results may be unpredictable.

With the Jot edit window, you can enter, edit and delete text using standard OS/2 editing commands. You can refer to almost any OS/2 book to get information on these commands

Window Layout
Jot's window can be configured to display only the elements you find useful and want to use and is designed to maximize the usable editing area.
The name of the file currently in use is displayed in the title bar at the top of the window. This is also the title displayed in the OS/2 Window list. In the hint area at the bottom of the window, the name of the current note, the state of word wrap for the note and the "Modified" status are displayed.
Note titles are displayed on the left side of the window and can be sorted in ascending and descending order, as well as "none". "None" will display titles in the order in which they were created. Hopefully soon I can include a function to allow arranging of the titles list in any order.
The button bar just under the menu at the top of the window, makes available some of the more common commands for quick and easy access and like the titles list, will have an arrange function in a future release.
The menu, button bar, note list and hints area can all be configured to be hidden or shown when the file is loaded from disk. However, these areas can be toggled on or off using menu commands or hotkeys, regardless of the configuration settings in effect. Check out the "Accelerator Keys" item in the help index for more info on these hotkeys.

Jot Settings:
The Jot configuration window allows you customize and save settings that control the display of window elements, colors and fonts for both the titles list and newly created notes, and other settings for customizing the way each file is created.
Default File:
If you have a specific file you work with all the time, you can enter the name and path here and Jot will open this file each time it starts. If no entry is made, Jot is started with no file loaded.

Jot has three configuration screens: Jot settings, NoteFile settings, and Note Settings.
The basic principle of Jot is to have each level inherit default settings if none are defined. In other words, each note will use the default attributes for the file its contained in *unless* you change the setting for the note with the Note Settings menu. Likewise, each file will use defaults inherited from Jot *unless* you use the File Settings menu to change those.
Changes made to settings for Jot take effect when the next new file is created. They will not effect any settings in an already created note file.
Changes made to settings for a file will take effect immediately but will not change any already created notes.
Changes made to settings for the current note will take effect immediately and will NOT effect anything else, including other notes.

Other Stuff

Jot is intended for use with small notes and files. I've had notes as large as 500K and files as large as 2 meg but the bigger they get, the slower things go and can even bog the whole system down. I've considered adding a function to check for and limit these sizes but so far, I'm undecided as to its necessity considering the purpose of the program. A dozen or two screens of text seem to work quite well so if possible, try to keep your notes within this limit. If you feel like experimenting and pushing the limits on note size, I'd love to hear of your experience.
